Sweep Training Program

The Sweep Training Program is the Midwest Chimney Association’s foundational pathway for anyone starting a career in chimney service. It is ideal for beginners and those seeking a professional career in chimney inspection, sweeping, and venting system service. This program combines classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and supervised field mentoring to help participants build technical skill and professional confidence.

Program Structure

The Sweep Training Program includes:

  • Four intensive days of classroom and practical training at an approved facility

  • A minimum of four on-site training days with experienced MCA professionals

  • Ongoing mentoring and structured support

  • Practical, written, and equipment-based assessments

Participants are evaluated throughout the program to confirm competency, safety awareness, and adherence to industry standards.

Course Details

The program has three phases: classroom instruction, field training, and final assessment. Participants start with four days of hands-on learning at a training center. Next, they complete at least four supervised on-site days with experienced professionals.

This approach ensures graduates not only understand technical standards but can apply them confidently in real-world settings.

Part 1: Training Center Instruction

The first phase includes four full days of intensive classroom and practical training. Participants learn:

  • Chimney system fundamentals

  • Inspection procedures and reporting

  • Sweeping techniques and equipment handling

  • Code awareness and safety standards

  • Professional job-site practices

Hands-on demonstrations reinforce learning. On the fourth day, participants complete an open-book multiple-choice assessment to confirm their knowledge and readiness for field training.

Part 2: On-Site Field Training

Real-world experience is essential. Participants spend a minimum of four days on active job sites with experienced MCA-approved professionals.

Field training allows participants to:

  • Observe and perform live chimney inspections and cleanings

  • Apply proper safety protocols

  • Practice customer communication skills

  • Work with various appliance types and service situations

Training days may be scheduled consecutively or over time. Participants are encouraged to train with at least two different mentors to gain exposure to varied techniques and business approaches. This enhances both technical skill and practical understanding.

Part 3: Final Assessment & Certification

The final phase evaluates your readiness as a professional chimney sweep. You will demonstrate your ability to safely and efficiently sweep at least four different appliances and chimneys.

Before the practical evaluation, a written assessment tests your knowledge of industry standards, safety protocols, and best practices.

Requirements

  • Equipment & Vehicle: You must provide your own chimney sweeping tools and a vehicle with a sealed bulkhead.

  • Insurance: Minimum $2 million public liability insurance required.

  • Accommodation: Not included; candidates arrange their own lodging.

Reassessment Policy

Candidates who do not pass the first assessment may retake it for a fee.

Upon successful completion, order your official sweeping certificates.
